Thanked: 1587I'm not sure it was what you'd call a crisis or whether it was just me being an idiot.
I used to lift weights a lot during my 20s and 30s - til about 35 I guess when things slowed down. I decided around 38/39 (I think) to go back to the gym after 3-4 years of nothing.
For 6 months all was going well when one day I thought "let's try benching my old weight". Five reps in I tore my right pec.
Like I said, I think that was more stupidity than anything else, though there was an element of me refusing to admit I was older and therefore probably should have taken things slower.
I suppose you could also say that taking up martial arts at 40 could be construed as a mid lit crisis - I don't know.

I can identify with Jimbo's experience. I just turned 49, and for the past 3 years or so I have been killing myself in the gym, on the weights, hiking, etc., trying to get in shape. My goal for my 50th birthday is to have a lean, hard body with visible abs and lots of definition. And yeah, I've had my share of overuse injuries in the weight room trying to keep up with all my current and former students who work out there. I'm still a ways off from my definition and fat-loss goals, though I have put on a good 15 pounds of lean muscle while losing at least that much fat, mostly by doing lots of big, compound lifts and using heavy dumbbell work.
Why am I killing myself like this, you ask? Because I can't afford a Harley...

Thanked: 4828I have noticed that nobody really talks about the empty nest much. Except how great it is. In three years I went from five teenagers in my house to just the wife and I. That was both in mid life and a serious crisis. I had lost a great chunk of my social circle. My wife had lost the people she "managed" at the same time. I had to start smoking again! All the energy the missus had put into five teens was now focused on me. It was not a pleasant couple of years. On th outside looking back now. I still have my wife. We are walking together again. Here is the bonus. I was permitted to buy a Misubishi Eclipse GT as a trade for quitting smoking again.

Sounds to me you need to be quitting more often.
I'm thinking I may like to live few hundred years, so it's too early for midlife. Alternatively if I can look at my age as entangled superposition of all possible ages, I could conceivably be in permanent mid-life state.
I think I like that better - Maserati here I come!!!

Thanked: 884I did it backwards. My life was pretty much a crisis until I got married at 51.
That was 11 years ago. Been pretty calm since then.Member Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club, participant SE Asia War Games 1972-1973. The oath I swore has no statute of limitation.

For a mid-life crisis, I think I took up shaving with a straight. In retrospect, a Harley or convertible sports car may have been cheaper.

Haven't quite hit a mid-life crisis yet, just turned 50, so I figure in another 25 years should be about ready for that, in the meantime, I'm still living the Dad's Life:
