Moonshine anyone

i was at a wedding saturday and they had 3 diffrent types of shine there straight,apple pie,and blueberry. i know its not leagle to make or have in some countries so i wont ask for important details like location but who in this forum has a story or a connection to moonshine. i found out my grandfather used to make it in his basement he made straight corn whiskey. i found out there is still a large group of people doing it even here in the us. www.homedistiller.com is one group. any good stories about family or your own connections to shine would be apperciated.

I have a friend of a friend who makes large quantities of shine in all sorts of ways. My absolute favorite are the moonshine soaked cherries.

Oh my, this brings back memories...

My dad did that a lot when I was a kid.
Just for his own use, nothing big or anything.

And he was all secretive about it too, drew the kitchen curtains for in the middle of the day and all.
Basically telling the whole neighbourhood he was burning again

What really gave him away though was when he sent me to the local grocery store to buy him 40 pounds of sugar and 400 grams of yeast...
And 4 small bottles of Vodka essence

I have a mason jar of clear corn moonshine. It's quite strong; not unbearable but probably the last thing I'd grab in my liquor cabinet for a nice drink.

My old man is a retired cop living in the Carolina mountains now and he met a judge up there who makes corn moonshine, and that's where it came from. Never met the guy myself and don't really know much about his setup other than it's corn-based.

Moonshine is great for the Dry Drunk sucker bet. Take 2 glasses and fill one with 'shine(or any high proof alcohol). Pour the alcohol from one glass to the other, and have them drink from the now empty glass. Repeat until they fall off their stool. They will get drunk off the fumes ,without consuming a drop of liquor.

The story about the judge brought back a funny one though:

Some years ago a couple buddies and I was spending the Easter at one of my buddy's cabin in Trøndelag (a County in the middle of Norway where moonshine always have been a strong tradition)
One day we had visited his family a few miles from the cabin and one of his cousins was coming back to the cabin with us, we offered him to ride with us in the car but he refused, he wanted to drive the tractor.
Naturally we arrived at the cabin a while before him, but time went by and we started to wonder why he took so long. When he finally arrived he jumps down from the tractor with a 1 1/2 gallon jug in his hand saying "I just had to stop by the local "lensmann" (Sheriff?) and pick up this"
Nedless to say, with four guys and 1 1/2 gallon of moonshine the rest uf the night is kinda blurry, but I do have a faint memory of us joyriding the John Deere on the surrounding fields

Being from the western North Carolina mountains, shine, or "good old mountain dew" is not hard to get, really. One of our notorious (now deceased) folk heroes from up around Waynesville/Maggie Valley was Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton. When the feds busted him the last time a few years ago with about 800 gallons' worth, he was looking at federal time. As he was an old man already dying of cancer, he took his own life by sitting in a running car in his closed garage instead.
