    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eC0kIkPnlCc

that's a finnish rock band called Eppu Normaali (song is recorded in 80's) and song is called Kitara, Taivas Ja Tähdet (Guitar, Sky & Stars in english) and that guitar player is going wild on that song, best guitar melody i have heard ever i love it and everyone who likes Dire Straits kind of rock, should like that too, even if you don't understand anything he's singing in that one...

Mark Nopfler is the man ---- damn good guitarist and quite original ---- don't know why he doesn't show off more ---his tonal quality and expression is superb --- he can be copied but he is an original.

I was in high school when the first Dire Streights album first came out. I worked on a loading dock at a warehouse with a guy who was a very talented musician and we would talk about music a lot (he actually had a degree in music). I remember asking him if he thought Knopfler was good. My friend thought that, yes, he was pretty gifted. I asked him if he thought he could play that well, and his answer surprised me. He kinda laughed and said "Yeah, I can play that well, with enough practice, anyone can. I wish I could WRITE that well. Immitation's one thing, sounding different, that's hard"

This guy is good - but nothing on this earth will compare to the way Mark Knopfler sounds playing Tunnel of Love, Live on the Alchemy album. I remember hearing it for the first time and wishing I was old enough to go to see him play for real live - something I have now managed 4 times.

Joe - you are 100% correct. I have been playing guitar since I was 6 years old -nearly 30 years of playing guitar. Its easy to play like anyone out there - just study the technique and the style, practise practise practise and you can be anyone you want to be. Thats the easy bit.

The hard bit is sounding like noone else ever sounded before. I am still searching for that.

I agree with Si and Joe ---- I've been playing guitar for 20 years and have adored many a great guitarist. I would say that even with practice it is hard to duplicate those immeasurable qualities that the great ones have. You can play faster, get your chops down pat but there's a guitar/guitarist connection and emtional expression that really is unique ---

One of my favorite aspects of Gilmore's playing is those extra soulful bends --- usually 2 - 3 steps -- totally left handed -- haunting stuff ---
