Yeah well as true as that may or may not be, recall that history will only recall that the American public voted them in to do, or not do what you say.

In other words, it's on the public - and the public keeps on voting for these kinds of people... Hence its safe to assume that this is what America wants.

i dont have time to read all of this right now but i want to commend everyone for a good thread that has stayed in the lines abnd gave great points without arguments !!

At the same time, a two party systems only gives you two choices (or three if you count abstention as a choice). Basically the public is put in front of a fool's choice.

Let's take the deficit (and debt) as an example... there are 4 partial solutions: raise taxes, cut taxes, increase spending, reduce spending. One party is supposed to be "Raise taxes and increase spending", the other party is supposed to be "cut taxes and reduce spending"... those two "solutions" don't fix the deficit, at best they slow its growth or keep it static. A good part of the deficit (and debt) growth in the last 13 years can be traced back to "cut taxes and increase spending". As far as I can tell, no major candidate ran on the obvious solution of "decrease spending and raise taxes until it's back under control".

The spending cuts would have to come from one of the sacred cows to make any impact (FY2015 data):
Healthcare is 27% of the budget
Pensions is 25% of the budget
Defense is 22% of the budget
Welfare is 10% of the budget
Interest on the debt is 6% of the budget
(If one was to cut all spending below this line to $0, it would only cut the FY2015 deficit in two)
Transportation is 3% of the budget
Education is 3% of the budget
Protection (PD, FD, prisons) is 1% of the budget
General government is 1% of the budget
Everything else fits in the last 2% of the budget (foreign aid, NASA, scientific research, ...)

The only things that get them in the least bit animated are Black Friday sales and NFL football games. When a civilization reaches this point of decadence, a Roman Empire-style collapse is soon to follow.

This is sadly true. It's not what the American people want as far as voting it's just that we have become complacent in some,fearful of retribution in others and just down right take sides and argue in others as well. We are a divided nation that has lived off the fat of the land too long and rested way too long on our laurels.We were great once upon a time and were the envy of many....tis no more.
