Lets hear your favorite quotes. Funny, serious, even political cheapshots welcome !
I thought of this when I saw that quotes that are over 500 characters and can't be used as a signature.
I'll start....
"A people may prefer a free government, but if, from indolence, or carelessness, or cowardice, or want of public spirit, they are unequal to the exertions necessary for preserving it; if they will not fight for it when it is directly attacked; if they can be deluded by the artifices used to cheat them out of it; if by momentary discouragement, or temporary panic, or a fit of enthusiasm for an individual, they can be induced to lay their liberties at the feet even of a great man, or trust him with powers which enable him to subvert their institutions; in all these cases they are more or less unfit for liberty: and though it may be for their good to have had it even for a short time, they are unlikely long to enjoy it." -- John Stuart Mill, Representative Government, 1861
OMG, he was talking about the Patriot Act 140 years before it happened!!
I can't wait to see what Lou comes up with here.

Geez, no pressure HERE!
OK, off the top of my head......
President Dwight Eisenhower was having a discussion with French President Charles DeGaull regarding the status of American soldiers based in France during the Cold War, and DeGaull demanded something along the lines that 'Every last American soldier be removed from French soil', to which Ike responded
"Well, that's going to take a while because we'll have to DIG THEM ALL UP!!!'That works for me on so-o-o many different levels -
Another of my faves.....Winston Churchill seated at a dinner with a particularly obnoxious dinner companion....finally, the conversation degenerated to the point where the lady exclaimed "Sir, if you were my husband, I would feed you poison!", to which Winnie replied 'Madam, if I were your husband, I'd drink it!"
I should note that both of the above are popular quotes, but I personally have never seen them quoted in context.

love that Churchill
Churchill was a champ and a great example of whats wrong with the world today.
No politician today could get away with things like....
I am fond of pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals.
Winston Churchill
I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly.
Winston Churchill
The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.
Sir Winston Churchill (1874 - 1965)

Thanked: 1587Well, I'm going to be serious here for a minute, because one of my favourite quotes is about to be on the lips of many Australians tomorrow for ANZAC day - when we remember the men and women who fought and died for our country. It's part of a longer poem, "For the fallen" by Laurence Binyon (1869–1943).
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

"A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on. "
Winston Churchill
"A classic is something that everybody wants to have read and nobody wants to read. "
Mark Twain (1835 - 1910), Speech in New York, Nov. 20, 1900

Well said James,
I shall be at the dawn service tomorrow, but haven't made up my mind about the march yet. My old dad thinks this may be his last one, but he's been saying that for 10 yrs.
Cheers
John

Thanked: 1587On a lighter note:
"Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much."
"Arguments are to be avoided; they are always vulgar and often convincing."
"Genius is born - not paid."
Oscar Wilde.
And here's my personal motto:
"These are my principles. If you don't like them......well, I have others."
Groucho Marx.
