All way to familiar with shift work, been doing it for 26 years, 12 hours shifts, 4 on 4 off, 3 on 3 off, nights and days. I like it, i am used to it, never had a problem sleeping during the day, but met many that do.

Its all about finding a routine that works for you.

I've never had a problem sleeping during the day myself.
The problem is when you finish the last night of nightshift you have 3 choices
1: take a full sleep (6-8 hours) but you won't be able to sleep that night and your sleep pattern is screwed up.
2: take 3-4 hours sleep, you should be able to sleep that night but you'll feel awful all day.
3: Stay up all day, really hard to do for the first few days but eventually you body gives up telling you to sleep.

I used to do 3 all the time because every time I attempted 2 I'd do 3 lol
I'm mostly doing 2 at the minute because my wife is off on maternity leave and we'd fall out if I was up all day, plus she's there to make sure I don't sleep in.
Don't think there's any good way to do it. Just have to tough it out

Never taken a sleeping pill in my life, not that I'm against them, but the doctors here rarely prescribe anything like that unless it's a last resort.

Worked for 24 years working mostly the midnight shift. Got off at 8 and stayed up all day until 4-6 pm. Went to bed and got up at 11 to go to work. You had to stay busy during the day though or else got sleepy too early and messed up your routine. Didn't take too many days off as that messed up your routine. Lots of overtime and mostly worked 28 days each month. Money was good though and I managed to save quite a bit. Was able to retire comfortably at 55 years of age and not busted up and still able to do stuff. That was 10 years ago. Still happily retired and still not working. Traveling and enjoying the grand kids!

    Had a joke at home:

    Kids: Mom.......who is that man?

    Mom: It's your father dear!

We have a shift premium from 6pm to 6am of $2 and $3 if you're working those hours and surpass 40 hours OR work over your schedule hours for that day. Its a very good premium. I worked for another outfit that only paid 10 cents for off shift work. My thoughts on that were they didn't value the capability to operate their facility in the off hours or their employee's.
Seems rare today for a company to want to have happy employee's, and take care of them. I believe the corporate plan anymore is - less people, lower pay, longer hours, more work load but be "safe" because you know that's top priority. I think that's one of the thing's these companies tell them selves, because if you say it enough it must be true....right?
