In scouts we made them out of quarters and a spoon. Took weeks of banging way and drove the folks nuts.

Very cool gift for any daughter/granddaughter. Something she will hopefully keep for a lifetime.

    Perhaps they shot them?

We just punched a hole with anything we could find and carved it out with a pocket knife. Took just as long as beating them out with a spoon as to carve out the hole. The bigger the coin the wider of a band you could make but the beat time went up exponentially and once they got so wide the edge would roll or curl under.

Beg to differ with you, but the Ranger badges are made from a "chief" or Cuauhtémoc Cinco Peso or 5 peso coin. They are coin silver. Prior to that the ones I've seen were made from 8 Reales or Ocho Reales.

I used to make them. Mine were made on commission by the gents that had the right to wear 'em. I made several before I got good enough to get a couple of orders. Haven't made one in over 20 years now. Wasn't exactly a get rich deal.

The guy out of Utah that makes copies of old west badges has somewhat of a price on his head here in TX because of his ranger badges.
