Thanked: 3223I wouldn't get too worked up, I think Spender was being just a little tongue in cheek. I'd have to agree that a government pension plan that you paid into all your working life and are now receiving benefit from is not even close to being on the dole. You paid for it.
I knew private health insurance in the US was expensive but did not realize how expensive. What you were paying for Blueshield would be more than The federal and provincial taxes payable on a $65,000 yearly gross income in Ontario with health care already included iCalculator | Ontario Salary example for $65,000.00 . Being retired I am drawing my government pension and company pension but still not paying for healthcare.

BobH- thank you for bringing in that example. I'll say it again: the US pays almost twice as much per person in health care costs than the other industrialized nations yet we have worse health outcomes.
So we're paying much more for much less. This has been true for decades, BTW- its not anything to do with Obamacare. And we want to keep the US's unique employer based insurance system why? I don't know if the ACA is the answer or not, but something had to be done.Last edited by Andy77; 04-18-2015 at 03:08 PM.

Thank you Bob. It's a bit counterintuitive: if we pay more, we should get the best, right? Wrong. When politicians say things like "We have the best healthcare sytem in the world" they are talking about our top teaching hospitals and cutting edge surgical procedures. That claim isn't true about actual healthcare for the average person.
So if you need a heart/lung transplant or some other cutting edge procedure, come to a US hospital. But if you're an normal person trying to live a healthy life, you're better off somewhere else. And we want to keep our current system why?Last edited by Andy77; 04-18-2015 at 03:31 PM.

Thanked: 3223It is not counter intuitive to me because I do not live in the US. I don't have the luxury of self absorbed navel gazing but look around and see what the rest of the world is up to. All I can say from looking around is that the system of healthcare I live under is not bad but could definitely be improved. I certainly would not try and convince anyone it was the best in the world, obviously it is not. Oth they do heart/lung transplants and other cutting edge procedures here also and I imagine in the rest of the world too. I mean the world pioneer in human heart transplants was a South African Doctor Christiaan Barnard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia .
