Berlin - Here we come!
My better half and I are off to Berlin tomorrow morning for a week of beer and currywurst! Can't wait!
I've already saved the addresses of The English Scent, A Different Scent and The Muhle Store - they will be getting a visit and probably a few of my Euros. I'm surprised there aren't more artisan shaving shops in such a fantastic city.
I'll be keeping my beady eye open for antique shops or flea markets. I might strike it lucky and find true shaving treasure!
I'll post pictures of my acquisitions on my return.

There is exactly one "artisan" shop in Berlin worth visiting, and that's 1001 Seife, Ehrenfelsstraße 9, 10318 Berlin. Probably best known for Tabula Rasa.
The English Scent isn't really worth visiting, unless you like ogling The Big English Brands. They are cheaper when buying in the US, though.
The Mühle store carries Mühle (duh!) and a few other pedestrian brands. Not really worth visiting.
The Different Scent is probably Europe's best stocked shaving shop. Get one of their Old Traditional strops. They also have a wide variety of Thäter brushes, and lots of high quality shaving soaps. Their real strength, though, are hand crafted perfumes. Bring a platinum credit card if you intend to go perfume shopping. And do give Jens my regards. He is one of the most dedicated men I have ever met when it comes to shaving and perfumes. Things you won't easily get in the US, but which are well worth having, comprise:
- Meißner Tremonia
- Lorenzo Villoresi
- Klar Seifen
- Dr K Soap Company
- Essence of Scotland
- Golddachs
- Kniže
- Pils Rasierhobel (aka safety razors), the only DE you will ever need. iKon et al still will wish they could make something like that in 2115, yet still fail. German engineering at its finest. Pricey, but well worth the money.
- That one fabled Thiers Issard razor which they may still have. If not, get three Aust razors for the same price, they are well worth it.
Wheadon are just around the corner, but the only thing worth buying there is Meißner Tremonia.
While you're there, why not pay The Gentlemen's Circle a visit? Give Andre my regards. Pick up some Meißner Tremonia while you are there...
Get a Berlin Welcome Card, too. While they don't sell Meißner Tremonia (yet), they offer some good rebates on traffic and food.
Speaking of food, decent food is hard to come by. Restaurant Brenner is good if you don't show up in spandex and trainers. If you do, The Grand is the place to be. In walking distance from the aforementioned shops, it offers meat in good quality.
As for meat, and speaking of Currywurst, forget Konopke or Curry 36. Hyped, and not worth queueing. Try Witty's, Curry mit Biss, or Curry Baude instead. Or Langes Imbiss.
If you want Bier (not the stuff you get in the US, but something more closely resembling traditional German beer), visit Brauhaus Lemke. They have an outlet near Hackescher Markt, where you will find The Different Scent, Wheadon, and Mühle. Don't try the 10‰ beers. Consider yourself warned. Once almost fully loaded, head over to Diener Tattersall and order "Bitte ein Bier, einen Hackepeter - vielen Dank" per person. Don't ask, just thank me later.
Also, make sure to book a trip with Berliner Unterwelten. Nothing says "Berlin" quite like a well deserved bunker, of which we have a few.
And while you're there, visit Potsdam. Holländisches Viertel and Schloss Sanssouci. Be careful, though, there are puttos which do not wear any clothes (fun fact: a young gentleman from Texas, age 5, almost went ballistic, "look, Ma, they're naked...!").
Last, by no means read anything by Bill Bryson before departure. We're not all about porn and Schnaps. Srsly.

I visited The Muhle Store and bought a little travel tube for my travel brush. Don't really need one but just had to buy something from there. The Different Scent was amazing. What a truly wonderful shop! I was in heaven. Bought some shaving cream and a leather travel wallet (another) for a razor. I could easily have spent thousands!! I was shown a selection of Ralf Austs and Bokers, including an Elite. I was eventually dragged out by SWMBO!!
Visited Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp today. Very moving.
Three days left. Still so much to do...

My Berlin buys! Ampelmann flannels which I use as a hot towel prep, then wipe my blade on, Castle Forbes Lime shave cream, a Muhle travel brush tube, Muhle Aloe Vera post shave balm, an SR leather travel pouch, and Treufitt & Hill pre shave oil.
My new favourite shop in Berlin is The Different Scent. What an Aladdin's cave!! Love it!
