What troubles me most about this social media trend is the rapid response to ending people's careers and publicly shaming them for "perceived" remarks, usually taken out of context, or just simple human mistakes.

In Canada, we have a General who made a remark about men being "wired" differently than women, and that it may be responsible, in some cases, for the improper and extremely troublesome problem of sexual harassment in the military. It is a terrible problem that needs to be addressed, and that's what he was trying to do.

His comments were immediately taken out of context, he recognized within seconds of making this remark that it may not sound the way he meant it, and promptly apologized if it was taken incorrectly.

We now see the social media hounds, the vested interest groups of the Politically Correct, hounding for his resignation, his entire career of service dismissed, and he is being tried and convicted in the media and social media feeds.

Is this the society we want to live in? The slippery slope of Orwell's "thought crimes"?

What I have been seeing lately is a lot of so-called progressives, who shriek and howl at the slightest impropriety of speech, demanding a mob justice via social media. Free speech to them is their speech, and they are naive if they don't think one day this beast they've released won't turn on them as well.

Was funny, on another subject in the same newspaper on income splitting, where if there is one person working and the other is a stay-at-home parent, our Conservative Prime Minister wants couples to be able to "split" their income, to represent the work in home and lower their overall tax burden. A feminist commenter made a scathing remark about this plan, because supporting the Conservative Government isn't cool here, regardless of the merit of any policy, and remarked that it's about the "Man" staying at home so his "Wife" could be a good Stepford "woman in the kitchen". Was hilarious to watch her get ripped to shreds by other politically correct shrills for the "sexist and homophobic" remark she made - didn't she realize there were stay-at-home Fathers? Didn't she realize there were same-sex couples? She should be ashamed of herself!!! LOL!

I had quite the chortle at watching this politically correct woman get bitten by the beast she had previously unleashed on the General.

This behaviour, with the narcissistic need to portray oneself via social media, in my opinion, is indicative of how we no longer connect and try to co-operate with one another, as a society we've come to lack humility and understanding/empathy for each other, and it's become a game and contest to portray yourself as the most "hip", the most connected, and the first to rally the mob and dish out instant justice the second another person makes a perceived mistake - whether right or wrong, regardless of how it destroys another person's life.
