Looks to me as though the spectators are watching something to their left. Maybe a monitor. And possibly the video we are seeing just shows what the spectators are seeing on the monitor. Or are we to believe that the people in the gym are actually seeing the hologram of a whale jumping up and out of the gymnasium floor. The crowd reaction seems to confirm a monitor screen special effect.
