We Have Skills Too !!

Here in New Hampshire ….our trapping season starts Nov 1 through April 10 th. Different animals have limits and shorter seasons than others. At the end of the trapping season ..us trappers have to fill out a fur report…which is sent to Fish and Game for studies. We have to keep a log book of where we trapped…how many traps were set at that location…how many nights the traps were set…and what animals you harvested. We also have to have a signed land owner permission slip signed also. So there is a lot to it.

Love that hat and it would be great for hunting but not much opportunity to wear it here where I am. Although it gets cold in the stand sitting still even though we don't get below zero temperatures like the great white north. Still love to have one though.

Make hats and gloves out of the fur….the Castor glands are 100.00 per pound ( takes 5 beaver to make a pound of castor) …The meat is put in the crock pot….. the skulls are cleaned and sold…the tails are tanned and use to make wallets. The rest of the pelts are shipped to Canada for the wild fur auction….where China and Russia are big buyers of our North American fur.

Wow! Didn't know there was a market for beavers hides and the sort anymore. Since I live in the city, these things are foreign to me now.

Yup..it’s my ice fishing Tuk. But if it’s over 25 degrees and no wind …the Beaver hat is too hot !…lol

Oh yeah, there is still a market for furs and skins. People in Florida trap otters, beavers, nutria, fox and coyote also snakes and alligators

Hides and furs are not the big market they used to be, but for some applications they are unmatched. Plus I think it’s good to see people choosing to live close to the land, and in some ways, preserving the old ways.

That’s for sure….Coyote and Castor are the only things worth money now a days. I do Beaver nuisance removal…and get paid to have fun these days.

There is a nuisance gator and ferel pig removal market in Florida. In some places the woods look like they have been rototilled from the herds of pugs over 100. Ferel pigs are such a.priblem here that there is no bag limit, size, sex or age limit, there is no season or daylight hour limit meaning you can hunt them at night with lights. On private property you can hunt them any time of year without even having a hunting license EVEN IF YOU ARE FROM OUT OF STATE. That is the extent of their epidemic overpopulation.

Castoreum is a scent marking gland in the beaver. Theses sacks are dried and used in Lure Making …to catch other animals. Castoreum is also used in some food froducts…But mostly sold overseas as a holding agent in Perfumes. Here in NH …there is a Distillery ,that makes castor flavored Whiskey…it’s delicious!Attachment 333896
