Thanked: 3228Amazing too is that the Osprey automatically calculates the "Kentucky windage" needed, caused by the refraction of the water, to successfully hit it's under water target. Hard enough for a bow or spear fisherman to do never mind being in a dive while doing it.

Thanked: 4828I was not sure if this was going to be about the bird or the boat. Prey birds are pretty cool, even more cool when they are fishing. Bald eagles can swim too but not usually on purpose. They have a hard time taking off once they get wet and often have to swim to the beach. The Osprey is clearly better equipped for the water. That is a pretty great link.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

Thanked: 2284I know of 2 nesting locations in my area. One is only 5 minutes away and the other you can watch right here. Birds of Breslau
Saw these guys quite a bit last year, we drive by them on our way to our dog kennel. One is often perched on top of the camera when you drive by giving you a great look at them. We'll see if they come back this year!!!Burls, Girls, and all things that Swirl....

Thanked: 1184I used to fish this lake at least once a week that had 2 pair of osprey. Every once in awhile I would get the up close and personal view of one of these birds in action. I think they used to watch me fish and laugh. Until I hooked up. A lot of times when you have a bass on the line, besides coming out of the water, they attract another bass that will follow close behind. One day a pair was watching me perched from a dead wood about 15 ft. out of the water. I thought 1 was going after my catch after it cleared the water twice. Pfffffff I caught a 1 pounded the osprey got a 3lb.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

I live near Appletree Bay & have seen sea eagles dive bomb fish from about 50 yards up. Amazing eyesight & targetting.

Underwater birds: there is a robin sized bird that I used to watch when I was trout fishing in Norcal...the first time I saw it bug diving I wasn't sure I saw what I saw. This robin sized bird with a comically bobbing (must have had a purpose) would hop from rock to rock along the river, then dive into the water, stay down awhile, then come up and land on another rock like nothing happened. It looked like nothing happened also! The Dipper, also called a water ouzel (cooler name). This is North America's only aquatic songbird and this little character walks and swims along the bottom to look for food. I'll bet Shaun has seen one.
Here is a vid of one in BC:Last edited by WW243; 03-22-2016 at 11:34 AM.
