I grew up on a farm and the only music ever allowed in the barn, where I spent at least 4 hours every day, was Country Western. I hated it. Now, when I hear all those old songs I kind of like them--and I know the words to almost every one of them. Also, I now hate all of the modern Country.

Merle was one of the great ones. Even when I was a kid his was some of the stuff I hated the least.

I love old timey music and old country. Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams Sr, Bob Wills. Newer old country like Waylon Jennings, Billy Joe Shaver, and of course Johnny Cash, George Jones, the list could go on and on. Merle Haggard was definitely one of the all time greats. Was in San Quentin for burglary when Johnny Cash performed there the first time. Inmate Merle Haggard hears Johnny Cash play San Quentin State Prison - Jan 01, 1958 - HISTORY.com
