Default Why Navy pilots are better than Airforce pilots.

At 29 seconds note the 1.4375 inch dia. arresting cable snapping above the running sailor. Eight were injured on deck.

Wow!! Can't believe that the plane was moving fast enough for him to save it after it left the deck.

Hope the crew weren't too badly injured.

Saw similar a couple of times when I was WESTPAC in '72. None of our deck crew was injured as they knew what could and did happen.

The pilot is supposed to go to full throttle when hits the deck just in case that happens. They come off the throttle when the bird stops all forward motion. I think that pilot might have pulled the throttle a bit early. He'll have a good story to tell and the plane wasn't lost.

Hope the "roof rats" are all OK. People have been decapitated by broken cables in years past.

I don't see a lot a scrambling on the deck so I don't think there were serious injuries. Hope so.

Da Nang AB had arresting gear in the '60s. SF

Sometimes all the throttle in the world won't get her done.

If you factor in the speed of the carrier and the true wind, the apparent wind could add as much as 30 to 50 knots of wind over the wings.

A Grumman EA-6 Intruder. $1 million airplane with $100 million of electronics in it. One expensive bird. Glad to see the four ejections.

Ejection seats are a life saver when a cat malfunctions. Unfortunately the old Grumman Trackers they flew off the HMCS Bonaventure weren't fitted with them. Dribble off the end of her and you were liable to be run down by the carrier. I think every carrier pilot earns his pay everyday.

Being Born into an Aviation family has shown me many things about flying and Pilots, the main thing being Individuals Fly the aircraft and there are so many ways to be a Better pilot. Some have thermals in their blood and are natural pilots, others should Not be allowed to fly or even drive a car, Thankfully there are few of the latter. Add Luck and Fate and the outcome of close calls is never assured as ultra quick reflexes have saved many a day.

Wirms video shows a good save off that deck, those landings on a carrier can be hair raising on a perfect day.

Given that another plane took off on the other side of the ship while the parachutes were still in the air, it was lucky that the wind was blowing the direction that it was.
