Wow, so many replies. Thanks very much everybody! Surgery went well. I was awake but the sedative they used to relax me also keeps you from remembering anything, last thing I can recall is sitting up getting ready for the spinal anesthetic before watching them bandage up my stump.

Surgeon cut away somescar tissue ha had been irritating me & got the neuroma. It was way bigger than anyone had expected, about 3 or 4 inches long. The nerves had grown into a sort of loop & then grown back into itself so my whole sciatic nerve was on fire 24/7. He also separated the nerve higher up from some muscle tissue it had attached to.

Edit: All is well now. They're keeping the epidural going until tomorrow morning. Won't know how it feels until then.

I am glad everything turned out O.K.! Too bad it took a year to figure things out and get it fixed. I hope you are up and around soon. How about a permanent epidural? that way you NEVER feel it!.

I already asked the anesthesiologist to come home with me. Been sitting in my wheelchair for a couple hours now. Too many tubes to go anywhere but it's nice to sit up a while.

They put a new cartridge in the epidural pump about an hour ago & I haven't heard anything about discharging, so I guess they're gonna keep me one more night. That's fine with me. Strange as it sounds this has been a pretty pleasant hospital stay. Even food quality doesn't matter since my wife brought me a foot long subway this morning.

Edit: my out of pocket & deductible have been maxed out since February so if they want me to stay I'm game. Don't even have to brew my own coffee here.

I'm starting to get concerned about all the swelling tho. The first time around it took me 3 or 4 months to get my stump shrunk down to where it was when they made the socket on my leg. Judging by the swelling this time around it might take 4-6 weeks. It hasn't had much drainage so they put a smaller bandage on it so I could start wearing my compression sleeve. Hopefully that will help speed things along.

We made it home a couple of hours ago. Really missing that epidural. Doc gave me some hydrocodone & a steroid dose pack to tide me over until I can see my pain Doctor next week.
