The same thing up here in Washington State. Regular WA driver's licenses are no good to get on airplanes or cross Canadian border now because they issue to undocumented illegal aliens. I have an Enhanced WA DL (cost $120) which are good for airplanes and the rest. You've seen Seattle in the news lately and the $15 an hour is having same effect up there.Quote:

The problem as I understood it is that in the US, there is no such thing as uniform identity papers. In Belgium, the only thing counting as proof of identity is the national ID that everyone gets when they are 12, and which has to be renewed every 5 years or so. Driving license, library cards, etc don't count. It also lists the nationality. They are very hard to forge. Given that the government issues these automatically to people at the right age, based on birth registrations, identity fraud is very rare here in Belgium. Not saying the professional criminals can't get fake ID, but definitely not illegal aliens.Quote:

The universal ID card idea has some bad connotations attached to it, for me, especially if it lists ethnicity and the like.

There are plenty of places selling replica police badges and IDs from any state you want and it's all legal as long as the size is slightly smaller or larger. Only federal badges are actually illegal to make up and sell. I think the one exception are Texas Ranger Badges which are illegal to reproduce or have in Texas.Quote:
