I was only in Duluth to check in at the union hall. I wasn't driving, my boom out partner had a '65 Mustang with an automatic transmission. Then we went out to Chisolm to live, and Mountain Iron to work for American Bridge USS construction division.
When I was in San Francisco in the late '60s I drove a VW beetle up some of their hills, my heart in my throat if I had to start up from a standstill.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Now that was funny.
It raises the question : How many of the young kids have ever seen a car with a standard shift stick and a clutch pedal?

I can manually shift my automatic F-150. What a pain in the arse to do so.
I use to shift manually without the clutch. But that took a little thinking and paying attention to what you were doing.
Thinking and paying attention to driving is not popular now a days....

Say tranny nowadays and people think you're talking about something that has nothing to do with an automobile ..........
If you were to say "3 on the tree" you'd really have them stumped. When I was a kid I always wanted the four on the floor. Preferably by Hurst, but I ended up with 3 on the tree. Now I remember those fondly.
Had a worn out Dodge Dart slant six with a column shifter. The linkage was so worn that it would sometimes get jammed. Had to pull over and go under the hood and manipulate it to get it to work again. Black fingers until I started carrying a towel and some gojo.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I am comfortable enough now to always afford a good battery but I don't know if I would be there today if I couldn't have pushed or rolled down a hill to get started.....
