Memorial Day 2017
For the men and women all over the world who won't be with us this weekend.
Every Memorial Day this particular poem runs through my mind. I have posted it here before on other Memorial Days. It never wears old with me.
The Promise Kept
By: Bruce Obermeyer
Their son was only two weeks old; their daughter's years were three
When duty called this pilot to the war across the sea.
"Let's just pretend you're only going on a business trip.
Each day we'll write about the things we've done and then we'll slip
a note into an envelope and put it in the mail.
You send me yours; I'll send you mine, I promise, without fail."
He walked away with pounding heart while fighting back the tears
with "Come home soon, I love you, Daddy" ringing in his ears.
They kept that promise, sealed with love some 30 years ago.
They sent him tapes and photographs so he could watch them grow.
They're married now with children of their own who, at the Wall,
ask "Was my Grandpa brave?" and Grandma says, "Bravest of all."

I truly wish that more people understood what Memorial Day is All About
Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

I agree Roy
Right now my smoker is going cooking for a Homeless Veterans Foundation.
But Memorial Day is about those that never came back. They paid the ultimate price for our Freedoms
In Remembrance of the Fallen

That reminds me of a story on the nightly news this week. It was near Tampa Florida if I remember correctly. This awesome fella has taken up cleaning and refreshing the markers of the Veterans who have passed. Some of the before and after pictures were just amazing

Spring Leaves
whilst i transition
from green to gold
to red then brown
to all spring leaves
for whom ive grieved
fallen before your autumn
in your shrouded wood
where harsh winds no longer blow
may you rest in tranquil grace
farewell
in my season
i too will follow
