I'm not offended at all. I enjoy debate and try to encourage it whenever possible.
Take for example the "gay" thing with X. I was just trying to stimulate discussion of ideas (whether I agreed with them or not) with the hope of enlightening someone, perhaps even myself.
I often take sides that I might not believe IRL just for the sake of researching to make a valid case for or against.

I was going to say earlier that I was sorry if you found offense at my mention of the Dutch.
I wish you could buy sex here, it would be cheaper than the "free" variety.

I was just agreeing that we are off topic and that this direction should stop as it may be disrespectful to Robert and his art work.

As Alex already guessed, my argument was solely an extrapolation to illustrate what I think is the flaw in your reasoning. I obviously don't think you would should everybody who walks past your house. My point was that there is no point in shooting only because you have the legal right, just in case.

If that was using a straw man argument, then so was your original argument that the burglars in question should have been shot on the assumption that not shooting them might cause problems later on in whatever scenario you described.

Jersey Lawyer's sig only says that noone has the right to intrude into your house. I never contested that bit. But that quote nowhere entitles the owner of the house to kill the intruder.

Regarding the laws here: the law basically say 2 things.
first of all, defensive force should not exceed the attack itself. This basically means that if you shove me or kick me in the shins, I am not allowed to knife you or beat you senseless. Deadly force is only allowed in life threatening situations.

The second thing is that as soon as the attack stops, so should the counter-attack. This means that if you attack me, I defend myself and you run away, I am not allowed to run after you to give you a beating.
The idea is that you are only entitled to defense. Not revenge. Punishment is reserved for the judicial system.

Anyway, I respect your viewpoints. I really do. I just don't agree with all of them. I agree that we should leave the argument for now. If you want to continue it we should do so under an appropriate subject that makes this discussion on-topic.

Don't worry, I wasn't offended. Internet is not a very good way of discussing things in te same words as one would when being face to face I think.

Cleaning up my chipmarks I found this page, I wish I'd thought of it earlier in the thread.

    Marine Corps Rules for Gunfighting

The Marine Corps Birthday makes me nostalgic for the good ol’…well, maybe good is too strong a word. In fact, I can't say that I miss being on active duty; but I do miss being with my fellow Marines.

Thinking about my friends who are getting shot at by ungrateful Iraqis reminded me of this list, an old Corps favorite, on how to act in a gun fight:

    1. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns.

    2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap. Life is expensive.

    3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.

    4. If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough nor using cover correctly.

    5. Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral and diagonal movement are preferred.)

    6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a long gun and a friend with a long gun.

    7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.

    8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running.

    9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun.

    10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

    11. Always cheat; always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.

    12. Have a plan.

    13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won't work.

    14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible.

    15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.

    16. Don't drop your guard.

    17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees.

    18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. In God we trust. Everyone else, keep your hands where I can see them.

    19. Decide to be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH.

    20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.

    21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

    22. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.

    23. Your number one option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.

    24. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with a "4."

    Navy Rules for Gun fighting:

    1. Go to Sea

    2. Send the Marines

    3. Drink Coffee
