A very high percentage of wild fires, worldwide, are caused by people. With the number and severity of the big fires over the last while, we are most fortunate that this is the first time a fire has had this kind of destruction. I hope it is the last fire that has this kind of destruction. It has been a devastating fire for a tremendous number of people.

Looking at this from a distance I don't understand why there are green trees and grass surrounding burnt homes and cars.

    Looks more like structure fires.

The answer is actually quite complex and fairly simple at the same time. A fast moving fire has the ability to jump from item to item, usually it is the wind pushing sparks and flames. Because it passes through an area rather quickly it can leave or miss an item here or there and leave the missed item looking fairly pristine in comparison to the devistation around it. However it you looked at a missed tree in comparison to a healthy forest it would look sick.

The numbers are mind boggling. All from an era when our population was no where near what it is now, so in terms of percentages of the poplulation...
