I agree about taking a good razor. I have had this Tuckmar in my kit for many trips and haven't done anything but strop it. It's still giving me great shaves. Maybe I'll take Zip's advice and toss in a barber's hone for future trips, just in case.

    Aloha gents.

I agree 100 percent. I know I should be taking a better razor, and perhaps the new year will see that come to pass.

The Cutthroat Gents razor was a fairy decent shave under $30 (actually NOW it's under $20 at Amazon). It's a finer finished razor than the Gold Dollar by far. But some report that it is stubborn to take an edge and that it does not like to hold an edge. I can agree with this. It acts like it's forming a wire edge on every honing if you are not very careful. The Gold Dollar I got for free is the rock bottom 66 model, that reviewers have stated is not worth even honing. Yet mine yields a very good comfortable shave, and the edge holds up well. I can see why Youtube Gurus like The Stallion Anthony Esposito shave with it frequently. It's an enigma.

I love The Stallion! He not only extolls the virtues of the Gold Dollars, he mocks and curses the detractors. But I digress.

I always travel by air, and mostly with a carry-on only - so I'm usually both weight and space conscious. Hence my travel kit:

Half of it goes into old sunglasses soft case, the other half (the liquid one) goes into small zip-lock bag - to keep TSA happy.
When checking in, the shavette is replaced by one of my straights and small paddle strop.

And someday, he might even learn how to hone. That is, if he continues lurking around here.

This video proves what? And what relation has it to Anthony Esposito?

My travel kit consists of a GEM 1912 SE (plus blades in a plastic magazine) a synthetic Body Shop brush and a tub of Body Shop Maca root shaving cream. I also take a screw top plastic bottle of Natio AS balm. The reason I don't bother with a straight is that most of my travelling involves flying and many airlines no longer tolerate straight razors even in checked baggage.

You guys have some really great ideas and kits.
One day I might travel and have to refer back to this thread.

I fly all of the time with a straight in my checked bag and have never had a problem. Where did you hear airlines don't tolerate this?
