Thanked: 0I carry a four inch Kershaw lockback. If you keep it nice and sharp, it will serve you very well. I used to carry a leatherman, and I loved it. The problem was that it was too heavy for backpacking. Leatherman Micra was a good knife, very useful, but I found that the blade was pretty worthless for most of the things I would use it for. I'm very happy with my lockback and would recomend almost any single blade locking knife.

I carry three
Leatherman Charge xTi (best pocket tool I own and I own most of them )
Spyderco Military (large, thin slicing blade in very light weight carbon fibre scales)
Busse Badger (too heavy for some here but there is no heavy duty task it won't handle - You can find them on the Exchange at bladeforums.com)
Not the cheapest solutions but they work and they will hold up when you really need them to.
If I want a small axe I'll pack a Swamprat Crash Rat. One piece, all steel (well, okay, it has micarta scales but it would work just fine if they fell off - which they won't )
