Thanked: 3227Search & Rescue Tech (SARTECH)
Always admired these guys and the job they do. Nothing like a winter night jump.

Thanked: 4827My grandfather was in the first group of part rescue jump medics. His medical training was quit advanced, and he could jump day or night in all sorts of terrain. We train with them occasionally. They are our most likely call when it gets beyond us. They are good to have around.

Thanked: 3227I have flown with them when I was a member of the civilian search and rescue unit here. I have a lot of respect for them and what they do. Almost weekly it seems a Herc comes into Thunder Bay to para drop SARTECHs at the airport. I think "good to have around" is a bit understated. They are a fantastic and invaluable part of the search and rescue team to have access to.

Thanked: 4827True, that may have been understated, they are an essential service. We have many layers of essential service, they are one very, very specialized essential service. Also they do more than jump on land, they also repel from helicopters, both on land and sea. I’m happy to have them on speed dial so to speak.

Thanked: 292Until six months ago, I served on a search and rescue team in our county. However, we kept our boots firmly planted on the ground. I gave it up as I no longer have the stamina to stay out in the field for hours on end.

Thanked: 3227Yes, our civilian search and rescue units also do keep their fee firmly planted on the ground unless flying as observers after a proper training course. The SARTECHs are part of the Canadian military national search and rescue organization and are the ones who jump/repel. The Canadian Coast Guard is also a part of the national system. Can't forget the various police departments that also can get involved as well as civilian pilots and aircraft. Quite an effort by various groups to try and cover Canada.
