life and work with the virus
I have to say I am very fortunate as I am still working when so many I know are not.
My company suspended all training a few weeks ago and last week brought back 2 controllers that were in training at another unit.
To try and reduce risks my company has made us work in teams that never interact with each other so if someone gets sick they will only expose their team and not the whole unit. This was nearly impossible until we re-checked out the 2 guys who came back but a schedule was finally worked out between the union and management on how to do this.
My new schedule is 7 days of 12hr shifts followed by 7 days on standby and 7 days off. If one person gets Covid the whole team is off 14 days minimum and the standby team takes over. If 2 teams are infected were screwed. However if no one gets sick I will basically be working a 7-14 schedule so I cant complain at all.
We start this on Monday and I'm on team 3 so I dont go back until April 13
12 hours is max we are allowed to legally work and frankly it sucks but the near complete cessation of aviation makes it not so bad as it will mostly be boring rather than exhausting.
Would be even better there were places to go on my days off and if my wife wasn't working from home limiting how much noise I can make. Hopefully Ill get some nice weather so I can work outside a bit, get the bike going, lawn cleaned and of course finish my razor storage project (wife has declared no more painting inside)

Thanked: 4826You will very quickly get used to the length of your work day. I hope you work every shift and never have to come in on standby.

No corona virus in the area where I practice as a general practitioner (=family physician). I prefer the UK title as I trained in the UK. All non-acute appointments cancelled. Most patient contacts by telephone, email and whatsapp. Monday I will be the corona doctor for 5 practices. That way there is only one "dirty" practice every day and we save on protective attire.

When not busy 12 hours is easy, if busy its another story. Actually did a 13+ hour shift once when it was very busy and the guy I was working with died. He came in looked ill so I told him to go home to rest then call if he still couldn't work later on and we would deal with it then (there was no one else available). He got just outside the airport when he had the heart attack and his car went into a ditch.
There is nothing about that day I would like to relive

I mostly worked 18 hours a day and 6-12 weeks 7 days a week. I’m not out of work but I grant you this would make me crazy now, at least my wife has 8 hours a day of honey do,s
My schedule is different than most jibs, the patch had guys like me who got up at 4 and worked until 10-11 at night. Even just the hourly roughnecks put in 12 hour days and occasionally round the clock towers for 24, with a 6 week tour“ I,m getting the impression that everyone thinks I have TIME to fix their bikes”

Thanked: 556I’m fortunate in that I’m semi-retired and work from home already. All I need is my phone and the internet, so doing the social distancing thing is quite easy.
