Yeah, seems like I remember reading years ago that the Yellowstone Caldera is overdue to collapse, and that will be all she wrote for at least North America (and maybe everyone depending on how bad the ash cloud is).

Pete-I'm glad you and yours are safe.

    No problem Roy.
I saw that on the news....WOW!!

After riding around for two days I have seen much more of the damage around here.
Many trees, limbs and power lines down. Power and tree crews everywhere.
    Some roads totally blocked.
The town of Hubbardston had a total power outage and won't get it all back to normal till at least the weekend.
My son's power has been out and he has had to get a generator.
It took two days for me but the cleanup is pretty much done. I have 2.25 acres.
Saw a couple of convoys of power company trucks from out of state.

I know that this storm was way worse further down south as it moved up the east coast, but the tail end that hit us was nothing to mess with, and pretty unusual for this area.

I don't know which is worse---losing power in the summer when it's hot OR losing power in the winter when it's cold

There's a point of diminishing return on how much clothing you can shed or put on. Personally I'd rather sweat than freeze.

Back in '68 this area got a hell of a snow storm followed by freezing rain and a big wind storm. The rain soaked snow on the trees resulted in so many broken branches and even downed trees that most electric power was lost.

Then the skies turned clear and it got COLD. I can't find the record for Dayton WA were we lived but Walla Walla is only about 35 miles away and the recorded temp for then was -24 degs below zero. Dayton is almost always a few degs cooler.

My mom worked for our local power company 'Pacific Power and Light'. The crews from Portland came up to help as did units from other places.

I stopped by the office on my way home from school and some of the linemen were asleep on the floor behind the counter taking a cat nap-----they'd been up for 3 days!

Well the temps got warmer and the power had been restored. Mom said that about 2 weeks after all the power was back on an elderly gentleman who she called by name came into the office and after mom greeted she asked what she could do for him.

He said he knew that they were very busy but he was wondering when their power could be restored Apparently a branch had severed the power from their house and that's a home owner's responsibility but PP&L went right over and got their power restored No Charge.

That man and his wife had been getting by with a Coleman stove for heat and cooking and a Coleman lantern for light for over two weeks and they didn't want to bother anyone.

Not many people today would be so understanding in a similar situation.
