It’s amazing how many young men joined up underage. My grandad fought in the trenches in the First World War. When he went to join up at the local village hall the recruiting sergeant asked him his age. When he told the sergeant he was only 15 he was told “you have to be 18 to fight. Back of the line and try again”
When my Grandad got back to the front of the line again the same sergeant asked him, “how old are you now, son?”
They accepted his new age and he went away to fight.
Incredible generation.
