Thanked: 3228They should get a medal
The crew of the C-17 should get a medal for their decision to take everyone. Sadly Canada is not doing enough to help with the evacuation.

Not that I disagree (at all) but their hand was forced. From what I've read, this wasn't exactly planned, but a desperate mass of people was able to get in the cargo hold. All political arguments aside, these people are so desperate that many attempted to hold on to airplanes on the OUTSIDE as they were taking off. I've seen footage of people plummeting to their inevitable death and still they tried. So it's probably safe to say that once in the cargo hold, getting them out was probably going to involve machine gunning.
Sadly, the Belgian army has been clamoring for permission to finally get things moving but our politicians keep waffling and requesting lists and risk assessments while the Taliban lock down Kabul further, hour after hour. Initially they advised people to stay away from the airport until they would be collected by specialized teams including our special forces. Now they tell people a couple of hours in advance to find their own way to the airport. There are Afghans who worked for the Belgian military, who were supposed to get our protection, and some have indicated they are no longer expecting to live.
The French had the right approach: silently collect everyone, including the people under French protection, and then go to the airport, armed to the teeth.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

Sorry, no sympathy from me. Everyone knew what their actions would bring if this happened. That's what happens when you turn your back on your own people. Anyway, things have a way of working themselves out, one way or another.
A lot of you may think this cold, undeserving and inhuman. If you haven't experienced this type of a situation first hand, you have no clue! None at all!Semper Fi !

I’m with you John, if you ain’t been in it then don’t quarterback it. All of these people knew it was coming, should have left before now and the Afghans who were to get visa, for their help should have done it by now. And furthermore, if the damn Afghans won’t fight for their country why should we even give it a thought. These people had 20 years of training and the best military weapons at their disposal. Gave up at the first sight of a battle, our men were the ones fighting not them. I believe you help those who will help themselves. If the Afghans don’t want the taliban then kick their ass out, there’s more of them than taliban. 1 trillion dollars spent on them , yet we have veterans living in the street

Like everything else it's being turned into a partisan and not so partisan football. Plenty of fodder to assail Bden and with our news cycle it's unending.
Most of those at the airport are just Afghanis trying to leave, they have no connection to us. Many of the folks who have been helping us have had visa applications going back many years. Who was in charge then? Americans were warned weeks ago and did nothing until now.
I agree with you guys, this would not have happened any better and is basically what happened in Viet Nam.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 3228Yes, many years ago after my Nephew got back to Canada after serving in Afghanistan as a field medic and I remember telling him that it reminds me of a re run of the Vietnam war. I suspected then that it would end as it has. He said nothing to then to dissuade me in my thinking and outright agreed it most likely would go the way it has. He has long since left the Canadian Army but drops by the house frequently. We talked the other day about the collapse and how it ended just as we had suspected it would. I doubt it came as a surprise to many who served over there at the pointy end in the field outside the wire. It should have been pretty obvious to those at home too.
