I remember the daily "up spirits" pipe in the RCN but was never able to draw a "legal" Tot being a U/A, under age at the time. Even could not draw a double Tot when "splice the Mainbrace" was ordered while we were at sea in 1971. The Tot was buried in 1972 in the RCN so I never did get a "legal" Tot. I can say that if taken anywhere near neat it would take you breath away.

I remember when women sailors were first on the ships (80's?) and the pregnancy rate on a few ships exploded!

I remember those early days of women sailors on ships too. It took a little getting used to but I will say they were as proficient at their trades as their male counter parts. I remember one of our Chiefs and POs mess members telling me over a few beers that she thought we, males, were nuts going to sea after her first and last sea going experience on the North Atlantic in an AOR. This from someone who could hold their own with any male sailor I knew. Interesting times those were.

We used to operate in the early 70s with HMS Provider in the pacific. I understood it was originally an east coast vessel but they had to move her west cause her top deck couldn't take the rough seas in the Atlantic.

Many years ago an old friend of mine's daughter was on the USS Abraham Lincoln when George W. Bush was on board. The ship had been at sea for a year and Bush wanted the sailors to be able to get to their family's ASAP so he was flown to the air craft carrier.

He'd been to the work out room and was walking with his security detail when he encountered a group of sailors. My old friend's daughter 'Julie' was among the group. Not wanting to draw attention to herself she slipped behind the other sailors. Well Bush saw her and pulled her out and posed for this picture. That's Julie in the black sweater.

Well she wrote home and said "Mom, he smelled"! My old friend said "Honey, even the President of the United States, sweats".

Couldn't say why she was moved to the West Coast except it would not make sense for a small navy to have 3 AORs all on the East Coast. The Pacific Ocean is none to gentle a place either.
