I'm working on plan D at the moment I think...
At first I was going to use 80crv2 as the core, then copper, with wrought iron on the outside. But then remembered how hot wrought wants to be when it's being forged, and how that would not play well with the copper layer when being drawn out. My concern was that wrought's working heat would have been uncomfortably close to or even over copper's melting point and I really don't want to skoosh out molten copper all over the place. I then screwed up two canisters. I wasn't patient and didn't soak long enough in the heat. Then yesterday I made canister #3 which I think looks solid. So hopefully this weekend I should be able to get that drawn out to size and give it a shot.
I usually have some 15n20 and 1095 or 1084 on hand for use in Damascus, but unfortunately I'm out at the moment. It would have been *much* easier just to use a piece of that for the outer layer. So plan E (should it be needed) would be to order in some steel and try a billet that has from the centre: 80crv2, copper, 15n20, copper, 1095. Either way I'll definitely try that one day. I just hate placing small steel orders and don't have the $$ for a large order right now.
Fingers crossed, may actually have the start of a thing soon...
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Got this cleaned up tonight - I think it worked, but it still needs to be drawn out as it's still about 3/8" or around 1mm thick. So, fingers crossed I might be able to turn it into something after all.

Been living in my inlaws basement for about 8 months while our house is being built. Closing in March so I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Gonna take a while to get the Razorlab up and running again but it will happen.

Here you go Joshua...
Almost got this finished last night but I had to set the handle aside for the epoxy to cure. At least the blade is pretty much done. This is coming out of a coffee etch (ferric chloride etch to start, cleaned & degreased, then into really strong coffee) which worked really well to darken the dark bits.
