house brands are usually filler and not really that great. my two go to brands are Padrons and Rocky Patels. I just bought a box of Rocky Patel -Edges. they are full bodied and superb. better then there 1990,s.
I have found that buying a box puts the price reasonable for high end cigars. also I like buying smaller cigars that take 25 min to smoke. that puts the size around 4.75x48.
try a bunch. they are like wine. u will know when u don't like the taste. rember, the first 1/2 inch isn't so great...then it gets tastey..and the last inch is the jackpot.

I haven't smoked in years and the only cigar I really ever enjoyed was a cuban a rich friend of mine swiped off his old man. The only reason was probably because it was "forbidden" by the govt in charge and as teens growing into young men those kinds of things are always sweeter in the mind than in reality. Besides, I mistook the dizzy head rush from inhaling cigar smoke for a good time and thought I was having more fun than I was
I used to drink beer for the same reason. Although I do have to say the undiluted german beer was actually pleasing to the palate. I've since decided forbidden fruit isn't what it's cracked up to be.
Needless to say I don't have any cuban cigars on me and I don't eat abalone.

A few years ago I smoked both the Arturo Fuente's and the Onyx. I always thought they stood out in front of some of the more expensive ones, just generally all around better, but that is just my opinion. I agree with Warlock about only getting whatever size you can finish in one session, whether that session is 20 minutes or 2 hours. Once you put it out - leave it that way. Cutting in and lighting back up just kills the whole experience.
