Well...the whole thing seems to have gone pretty well. I've yet to try Windows (and see if it didn't freak out because of the partitioning) but Ubuntu seems to work quite nicely....hell of a lot faster anyway.
Now I'll be experimenting with the Linux software in the coming weeks.

Make sure you get Open Office. It's the best open source office suite. Opera is also free for personal use if you want an alternative browser. A good substitute for Photoshop is the GIMP. Ubuntu either comes with or you can use the native GUI to install a music player that can even take Winamp skins. I don't have any alternatives for ACDSee just yet.

A little late in the piece here, but I've been using ntfs-3g with Fedora (5 and now 7) for quite a while with no issue. I've enabled read/write in fstab when my windows partitions are mounted - never been any problems.
On another front SystemRescueCD not only contains gparted, but quite a few other useful tools as well (like partimage) on a live cd. Has gotten me out of trouble a few times in the past...
If I'm dual booting windows, I prefer to not install Grub to the MBR - it's better to put grub on the /boot partition and use the windows boot loader to handle the dual booting. It's slightly more work, but can avoid certain problems down the track. The default install to MBR works fine though.
All the IT guys at work say Ubuntu is great - I've used various flavours of Redhat since '97, so Fedora will always be my favourite. However, this weekend I'm doing a gentoo install on my home machine -heard good things about gentoo. We'll see.

I'll be defining it when I get home. A friend told me that they're standard in the newest versions of Ubuntu.
