Arar Rendition Irony
Surprising news from the US House of Representatives, today on the extraordinary rendition of Maher Arar in 2002. Not surprisingly, the Bush Administration still classifies Arar as a National Security risk and will certainly refuse his legal claim on the same grounds.
Even when many Republicans included apologies, Dana Rohrabacher said, "That is no excuse to end a program which has protected the lives of hundreds of thousands if not millions of American lives." which is a completely unsupportable claim.
In opposition to Rohrabacher, I'm instantly reminded of a line from the new Gavin Hood movie Rendition which ironically opens tomorrow. I saw the advanced screening of the movie this evening and the line I'm referring to is when CIA agent Douglas Freeman quotes William Shakespeare, "I fear you talk of the rack where men enforced will say anything". (forgive me if I have that quote wrong. I can't recall where it's from) Fortunately for Rohrabacher, I know that most people don't read Shakespeare or learn many of the lessons he teaches us. Unfortunately for Rohrabacher, many people do attend the cinema and Rohrabacher's very words are uttered by the nefarious Corrine Whitman played by a faultless Meryl Streep.
Politics aside, the movie is quite brilliantly done with outstanding performances and superb composition. For those of you who can handle graphic torture scenes I highly recommend it.
