They had too much fun, partied too much because they were so overwhelmingly successful, and colapsed in on themselves when the hang over got too bad... It also had something to do with lead poisoning...

Actually over time they became overly decedent and rotted from within. Thats why I mentioned the water empire model. Even at its most decedent it required an invasion from without to topple it. If we went global with our governmental system and used that model of population subjugation there would be no enemy's outside the state to give it a push after its inevitable decline.
