Can someone tell me why Amerian football players need all that padding and a helmet?? A helmet for crying out loud!!!?? Not a patch on rugby!! Good to hear the NY Giants won though! Everyone loves an underdog!

Because without the equipment, you couldn't have two guys run full speed and smash directly into on another. The structure of the body simply can't do it. What you have in Rugby are more shoulder type tackles as opposed to the full on collision. I'm not saying Rugby's no pad thing isn't tough, but its not the same as A. Football.

Rugby and American Football are just different games. Maybe someone who's played both can chime in (I think Jimbo has played the old Gridiron). I believe American Football was played initially more like Rugby and had little padding --- as the game changed , more padding was added. The ironic thing is that some say the game has become more violent and dangerous because of this addition of pads and helmets --- people given a false sense of security, colliding at high speeds, leading with the head (as part of the tackle), using the helmet as a weapon ----. I think I saw a program a while back where they measure the forces generated by a rugby tackle and football tackle. The rugby tackle was less in force but more isolated (causing cracked ribs and such) --- the American Football tackle was much higher in force, but because of the pads, the force is dispersed more , but causes different types of injuries --- shocking internal organs. And in American Footbal, you are commonly dealing with guys who are 250lbs plus and are extremely athletic --- I don't know the size of the rugby players but I do not think they are this big (correct me of course).

American footballers are very big and i should imagine stronger than the average rugby player. You get absolute monsters in rugby aswell!! Just have to look at a french player called Sebastian Chabal!... But it just seems to me that rugby players are so much fitter than the footballers! An hour long American football game is churned out and lasts for 3hours. And you have two sets of teams (offence and defense i believe). Rugby players are hammer & tong at each other for 80minutes flat out! And as I'm writing this I also have 2 cracked ribs from a tackle from a player the size of my local supermarket!
And the money involved in American football is ridiculous. No sportsperson is worth that amount of money IMO!

They are if they can help generate the revenue ---- in the scheme of things, their skills aren't worth that much, but when the amount of money generated by playing, watching football, etc is what it is, they are worth what they get paid or they wouldn't be getting paid that much money.

To kinda go further on what Justin said, it's all about advertisement. I am horrible at most ball games except soccer, but if the nation would tune in and watch me play terribly, then I'm totally worth that. What the team shells out, they get back many times over in network deals, merchandising, and people coming to watch and support me. The networks make millions off of just one game via advertising. Of course, don't forget the advertising that is physically at the game.

I know it's the biggest game of the season, but just for 30 seconds, CBS charged $2.6 million. Figure in at least 5 minutes of commercials at the very least, and that's some serious change in just a few hours. Furthermore, factor in the amazing fact that superbowl ads in and of themselves are entertainment- people (including me) will watch the ads just to get a good laugh! All I can say is helloooo money!

I think its silly that players make that kind of money and I think it is even sillier to sit and watch the game as opposed to actually playing! I love playing the game but hate watching it as it bores me to tears. As much as I hate to say it though, Justin and Quickorange are absolutely right!

I think that's the second or third time you've said I was right. Of course, the last couple were lost in the DB failure...suspicious
