[QUOTE=SinglerM;165932]I was talking about the kid in the cartoon; someone with (presumably) no knowledge of the bombings in Japan. Through his eyes, it was simply a premeditated attack which resulted in an enormous loss of civilan lives.
**The cartoon makes a statement to the effect that America is a terrorist organization. It ignores the fact that the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese Government of the day, resulted in us being at war with them. I am not a historian, but I don't believe it's accurate to portray the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as two single attacks by us. To frame everything properly, you would have to acknowledge the events leading up to it, starting with Pearl Harbor. These events are related. I do not know what information America's leaders had available to them at at time. Nor do I presume to know what information the Japanese leadership of the day had available to them either. Perhaps the Japanese felt that Pearl Harbor was a preemptive attack. It's possible they acted on intelligence of some sort.

Everyone knows that at this point in history, it was a war time situation. The author obivously isn't stating that America is a terrorist organization as you suggest, but simply noting a highly controversial attack not on a military base, as was the case with Pearl Harbor, but on cities, which turned thousands upon thousands of civilians into charcoal. So forget that there was a war going on and that the powers at be dropped those bombs to bring a speedy end to the war -- a not-so-subtle hint that the rest of the island could be wiped off the map just as easily. As I already pointed out, the people who carried out the attacks on 9/11 obviously had their reasons too, since they were willing to die in the act, but I'm sure their motives don't matter to you. They're simply terrorists.
That's the point this cartoon is making: it wants you to ignore what inspires any "terrorist" attack and look at the event for what it caused -- a lot of dead innocent people.
By the way, if you click the "quote" button beneath someone's post, you can manipulate what they've typed in the reply box without having to type asterisks.Last edited by Blade Wielder; 02-19-2008 at 04:00 AM.

Thanked: 90Just to derail this thread for a bit here, "The French Connection" has got to be one of the most over rated movies of all time. It was on TV a few months back and I made a point of staying up to watch it. I'll just say this, I wish I could get those two hours of my life back.
Back on topic, Rayzor, are you aware of the Imperial Japanese Army's actions in Manchuria and Nanking? Have you ever heard of Unit 731, The Batan Death March, or Pearl Harbor? I think it might help you put the bombing of Japan in a better context if you did.
It doesn't really bother me when someone who has done a serious study of the war in the Pacific objects to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but when someone makes flip remarks about the motives of the men who made those decisions without any sort of real research to back it up, it begins to sound inflamitory. Often, people who participate in forums like this will make posts that are written in the form of a question, but seem calculated to provoke an angry response from others. They defend themselves by saying that they are "just asking a question", but in reality, the question is a thinly veiled disparagement of the integrety and intelligence of others. In other forums, this is simply called "JAQing off," because it in no way contributes to the discussion, in fact, it just creates animosity. Some of your remarks seem similar to this tactic, I'm sorry to say.
If you feel that the US goveernment was acting immorally by those actions, I'm perfectly willing to listen to your reasoning, and you may even sway my opinion. I think that some very bright people feel the same as you do, but don't expect anyone here to show you any respect if you aren't able to articulate your thoughts in a respectful manner.Last edited by joesixpack; 02-19-2008 at 04:12 AM.

Just wanted to point out that Rayzor is banned and cannot respond. I think the mods did great job with that and we should just move on and ignore whatever inflamatory comments were made.
And I just thought there isn't anything else I'd be adding to this topic anyways
But yeah I like that threads remain open and just die when people find no more value in them.

Thanked: 0Unit 731
That's horrible. It's difficult to imagine that people could do those things to other people. I have heard of some of the things that were done to the Chinese, but this is the first I've ever heard of Unit 731, and their experiments.
Very sad.
I lived in Germany for a few years. While there I visited a couple of the concentration camps (now museums). Those visits were very sobering, and sad also.
Take care,
Mitch
