One of the pioneers of the conservative intellectual movement, that's for sure. He will be missed.

I agreed with him on virtually nothing politically. But there are other things than politics--such as integrity, fairness, love of learning, and an intelligent, open-eyed love of country and of the better parts of our civilization. From what I've read about and by him, W.F. Buckley carried those virtues through pretty thoroughly. And not least important in my estimation was his respect for language--not just its correct and stylish use, of which he was certainly a master--but his respect for language as a shared inheritance to be cared for, to be used not just to make a point but to speak truth as he saw it, and to be passed along, if possible, in a better condition than when one inherited it.
This old-hippie liberal was and is saddened by the passing of an eminent conservative.
