    Default Any investors?

Since we have such a diverse group here, I thought I'd see if there were any serious investors amongst us. I'm not one, but I would like to be My education in investing is just now taking off as I've noticed a few areas I think I'd like to get into. Besides that, I just want to understand what in the heck is going on in the world.

Pfft, I don't think I'll be making it big any time soon. If I accomplish "bigness" in about 15 years, that'll be awesome. Until then, I'll be working for the man!

What do you want and/or need to accomplish? I might be able to help.

None yet. My hope is to get into stocks. My ultimate goal is to be able to make some sound decisions and turn a little bit of money into a little more.

Have you taken any money management courses?

One of the best things that my wife and I ever did was to take a general money managemnet course (like once a week for 4 weeks or something). It gave an overview of investing, real estate, insurance issues, and the like. It really helped give me a better understanding about how to make money work for you.

That was like 12 years ago. We made some money pre-2000 bubble, cashed some in to put down on our place. Held on to the rest and watched it go up, up, up ........and then down, down, dooooooooooooown . Greed, pure and simple. Investing isn't easy!

Educate yourself first, and then go for it!

I'm working on it. Besides personal study I have a Finance class coming up this summer that promises to be both educational and torturous. Hopefully I will actually leave with some helpful information

Always distrust a Vegas man offering help in financial matters. He'll take you to the casino and bankrupt you.

I've got a finance degree and can point you to some great books. However, the best source is to imitate the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett. Look at the underlying fundamentals of the companies in which you want to invest, and only go with those that have good fundamentals. When you buy a stock you are buying a part of that company, and not a stock track record. If the company is sound, then you can't go wrong buying their stock.

Also, before investing, PAY OFF ANY CREDIT CARDS! the interest you are paying on those things is far more than any income you will make from the market. You are far better off eliminating the credit card debt (if applicable to you) before investing in the stock market. Then go to a cash only system for spending, and BUDGET. Part of your Budget should be your investing, because if you don't tell your money where to go, then it will go where it wants.

My rule is I save 10% of my net income, tithe 10% of my net income, and live on 80% of the net income. I always have a car payment in my budget, even when the cars are paid off, and the payment goes into a separate savings account. Then when I need a new car, I pay cash with what I saved. well this is getting into personal finance and not investing. I can help answer any questions if you PM me.

    Matt
