Banned my first person today!!

Ok, not on this forum but on a Rollerblading forum that I'm a member of.

Things had been getting really bad there recently. People cussing and yelling and picking on each other. So I talked to the forum owner and he pretty much said "Do YOU want to do something about it?"

So he made me a MOD.

I've only been doing the cleanup for about two days (started yesterday) and have already banned 1 person and given out more warnings than I can count on one hand.

It's kind of exciting. I'd like that place to be like this place but with younger members (most of them are in their teens so it might be hard) and about Rollerblading.

Anyone else ever done something like this?

Sure lots of people have done stuff like that Sadam,Adolph,Benito,and many more,dont know if they found it exciting(before you go nuts this is a joke)

Seriously. The place was terrible. Some new guy would ask a question and would have to run for cover because of all the "Noob" "Idiot" and a whole bunch of X-rated words that wouldn't be appropriate to use here.

All I'm doing is finally enforcing the forum rules there. You know, the ones everyone signed when the joined the place.

way to go LX!:nj I've been a Mod on a genealogy site, but never had to ban anyone, if anything it was tamer than SRP. :eek: Of course, most of our members were female and 40-65 years of age, so we didn't have to deal with too much other than lame jokes. :roflmao

Still, it's a difficult job but one that sounds like it needs doing. One of those thankless tasks. I'd say be polite and stick to your guns. If you find you are a lone voice maybe it's not the place that deserves your attention.

I used to crack up when I was in the old AOL sports chat rooms - if you said you liked the "wrong" team before you knew it you were barraged with curses. I've been pleasantly shocked by how pleasant the shaving forums generally are.

I used to be a moderator on this forum that closed down recently, a position i got by being really helpful. I had to ban two people, because they would run everything off topic, and just have full blown conversations. Then i had to ban one other person because they were seriously trying to get people to start a revolution on the board, against the forum admin, but he did it through the use of threats and foul language

Actually I'm surprised at how well it's all going. There's been a few people that are quite unhappy but the majority is excited about it. Seems that now that I'm quelling a few of the loudmouths a lot of people aren't affraid to speak up anymore.

I've had to slap a few people on the wrist but whenever I have they've responsed really well (apart from a few exceptions) and edit their posts etc when I ask them to.

I think it's good Alex - people need, and I think like, clearly defined boundaries. And if they are not as good at self-regulation as we are, then those boundaries need to be imposed upon them.

Good luck LX!!! I'm a member of another board that has a lot of younger members. We actually have an over 35 only section because the tone on the rest of the board gets so impolite. We wish the owners of that board would take out the trash so to speak but they make too much money off the kids so they won't.

I always find it sad over there when a 18 year old kid with a serious question, comes into the over 35 room and apologetically asks for help just because he knows he will get flamed to hell in the regular board.

Yeah, I banned a coupla guys in my life so far - I'm a global mod on a multi-k-users dvd-board from Austria and there's the occasional spammers and other guys that are just asking for trouble. Banning is a step I don't like, I tend to see the good in people - but some just ask for it and there's no other way. You'll get used to it ;)

Not a mod, but I do frequent a local car enthusiat forum. Constant bitching, fighting, and name calling. Any question asked is stupid to someone, or they have negative comments. It gets old real quick, although sometimes entertaining. That is why SRP is such a great forum. The maturity level is higher, no fighting, people welcome you and answer questions as constructive as they can-or at least point you in the right direction, and the generosity here is amazing. Everyone in this forum should be proud to be a member.

(One of the things about being a mod in a place like this is that you can't do the verbal equivalent of slamming someone's face in the table, yelling 'Do you think I'm stupid or what?!?!' and then kicking them in the nuts)

Hahaha. That's excellent. I've not done that. I've gotten sworn at a few times already though. Upon which I responded with:

"You may not like me but please edit your post or I'll remove it....and restrict your forum options."

Upon which I got more swearing and they got a 2 week cooldown period from me.

Hey, I'm not worried about how many people like it. Mob rule isn't good either. But at the time the only vioces being heard were the ones being derogatory and mean.

Had a damn battle with one person today. He just kept on making new accounts and reposting stuff. (he really didn't like me)

He even resorted to threats with spambots. In the end I had to ask the forum owner to IP ban him.

Don't know if he'll come back after his ban (2 weeks) but we'll see.

I have use people like that like I have use for a marschmellow knife to be honest.

I could never be a mod. I'm really ambivalent about this sort of thing. One half of me loves a good scrap and would be goading the offenders on :D; the other half is a tyrant who would swing the axe at the slightest provocation :nono:!

I have a marshmallow knife I use to shave with.

True, true, LX. You never said anything bad about B&B, just suggested I ALSO check out SRP. B&B is a pretty good site, but I'm after a site exclusively dedicated to straight razors, and SRP is THE site. Haven't been back to B&B in a while, but I'll check it out from time to time 'cos they have some good info on soaps, creams, aftershaves etc.

B&B gave me a good introduction to straights, for which I'm very grateful :). I didn't mean to imply that LX had said anything derogatory at all regarding that site. Hope I haven't got you into trouble over there; it'd be one hell of a way to repay you :fim:.
