Default A penny saved is a penny earned

Or rather, a Euro saved is a Euro earned.

I am normally not one to talk about money in public (it's a Belgian thing) but I figured in this case I'd make an exception because it might be a good tip for eveybody out here wanting to buy a high end custom, but not being able to afford one.

For the last 6 or 7 years (since the introduction of the euro), I've been saving up every 1 and 2 euro piece that ended up in my wallet.
All those coins ended up in one of those metal boxes that whisky bottles often come in.

Today, that box was completely full, so me and my wife counted them.
Let's just say that is was more than enough to buy:

    And still have change left.

So if you find yourself longing for something like that, empty the smallchange from your wallet every week, and try to hang on to every dollar, pound or euro coin you get, and fill up a whisky bottle gift box or something similar. When it is full, you'll have all the money you need. It will take several years, but slowly but surely, you'll get there.

In our case, we are not going to spend it on that.
A significant chunk of change will be spent on our next shopping trip for Malt Whisky.
Then I will also buy some more stuff to help me restore / make razors.
And the rest will probably be spent when we have to replace something in the house, like the microwave, TV or something else.

the point is, since that money is outside of the normal household budget constraints, the household constraints do not need to apply.

I don't make many transactions, and always use my change to help make transactions. I'd have to spend more in order to get more change

I never understood the existence of the 1 dollar bill. At least not in this day and age.
Small currency changes hands so many times that the 1 dollar bills don't last long, and keeping them in existence is expensive.
Coins last almost forever, so once they are made, they don't cost anything anymore.

I usually pay small charges with bills (smallest is 5 euro) and smallchange, so after a week I paid several times, and probably have a couple of euro coins.
It only takes 3$ per week to have ~900$ after 6 years.

whenever I work retail jobs I get $1 coins from the bank, quite a few $2s and a couple $1 bills to satisfy the few that don't want coins.

Saves my country money I figure, but it's pissed off a lot of my subordinates.

It's still more profitable at this point to keep printing $1's. I don't know why though I wish the US would replace the dollar bill with tenth-ounce silver dollars

I lov the dollar coins. Just don't try to spend them in a low end shop, the cashier won't know what they are and the manager will have to check with the store owner before they will accept them. They are that rare around here. On the other hand Canadian small change isn't even blinked at but acceted as legal tender everywhere. Of course I've tried to pay with a Canadian quarter when I've been traveling and had it turned down as "Not Real Money".

I love dollar coins, but they seem to fail miserably every time they've been tried in the last 30 years.

Thats because they are required to be at least worth the metal in them, where as our monopoly money no longer requires the backing of real worth like, for instance, gold!

How does that explain why the dollar coins aren't popular? The current dollar coins still have a lot more intrinsic value (which is less than a dollar, there is no requirement that they must be at least worth the metal in them) than paper bills do
