If the female eats the male afterwards, maybe word hasn't spread
And the males who do know don't procreate so their knowledge and survival instincts die out.
In fact, ages of breeding have insured that the males who pass down their genetics are the ones who choose sex over life.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.
To spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the Last Day

Thanked: 16just for fun
I chose Procreation just because there was no option for “just for fun” as I can’t procreate since having had the snip many years ago and I go with Joe on this one rather “f##k than eat”

Thanked: 735OK, as mentioned, if you are quite hungry, you won't give a damn about having sex (OK, maybe just a little...)
However, this is exactly why when you meet up with some lovely young lady you ask her out to dinner first. That way you get priority #1 out of the way, and can then move on to priority #2....

I feel that is it kinda hard to procreate if you is dead.
Hence my answer 'survival'
Now if you asked the black widow spider you might get a different answer

Thanked: 3Freud would have voted sex without any hesitation. Maslow would have voted survival. I voted with Maslow (even though I have never forgone sex for the want of a good meal -- obviously I've never been faced with starvation
).
A good article on Maslow's ideas is A Theory of Human Motivation, with the "II. THE BASIC NEEDS" section containing the meat of his premise relevant to this discussion, particularly this paragraph:If all the needs are unsatisfied, and the organism is then dominated by the physiological needs, all other needs may become simply non-existent or be pushed into the background. It is then fair to characterize the whole organism by saying simply that it is hungry, for consciousness is almost completely preempted by hunger. All capacities are put into the service of hunger-satisfaction, and the organization of these capacities is almost entirely determined by the one purpose of satisfying hunger. The receptors and effectors, the intelligence, memory, habits, all may now be defined simply as hunger-gratifying tools. Capacities that are not useful for this purpose lie dormant, or are pushed into the background. The urge to write poetry, the desire to acquire an automobile, the interest in American history, the desire for a new pair of shoes are, in the extreme case, forgotten or become of sec-[p.374]ondary importance. For the man who is extremely and dangerously hungry, no other interests exist but food. He dreams food, he remembers food, he thinks about food, he emotes only about food, he perceives only food and he wants only food. The more subtle determinants that ordinarily fuse with the physiological drives in organizing even feeding, drinking or sexual behavior, may now be so completely overwhelmed as to allow us to speak at this time (but only at this time) of pure hunger drive and behavior, with the one unqualified aim of relief.

Thanked: 131Isnt it ironic that this discussion has disintegrated into a discussion about sex and food? It puts me in mind of the old saying that men have two settings- hungry and horny. If he doesnt have a h***-on, make him a sandwich

Well duh, we all know from the movies that any other survival situation would warrant sex first.
