I am very interested in the thoughts of others on this article, particularly my new found European friends!

Do I think that United Statesians Should be more like Europeans?
    No.
You can be whatever you want to be, live your life the way you want to live it. You are free (for a given definition of free) to do so.

However, that does not mean I think you make the right coices. I think in several areas the US is making the wrong choices, and if they come up in a debate I will certainly explain my opinion.
But I do not think you are not free to make those mistakes.
Of course in some things I agree with the US way of doing things, but that was not the question.

I prefer a society that maximizes both personal freedom and personal responsibility. imho, American is already too "European"

That's why we need both parties. Both parties tend to go too far to one extreme or the other.

i don't support a strictly linear view of politics, see this quiz for more info:

as I've heard it said, "no one wants the republicans controlling your bedroom, and no one wants democrats controlling your boardroom!"

I agree with the article. It's becoming such a catchall political push to say "this is how Europe does it, so we should do it too." What people fail to realize is that our societies are different, and acceptable policy in one country does not make it acceptable here. It's personally frightening to me and many Americans to have the government cradle to grave us. In other countries, it's perfectly acceptable and expected- which is fine. If any European policy is suggested, I think we should consider it like anything else: just another policy change, weighing the benefits and consequences.

Load of bullock. "We're different because we want to be" is stupid for stupid's sake.

Those who do not learn lessons from the mistakes of history are doomed to repeat them, and those who are too dogmatic to accept a fine example when it's right in front of them are fools. Everybody else in the world is prepared to 'imitate' something good when they see it and nobody excludes the US, but for some reason such insular notions are rampant throughout North America.

Big Brother is telling you not to seriously consider any options which remove their power to control you. All they have to do is say "freedom" in there and everybody bows down. Every time I hear an ideologue use that word, I'm skeptical that he's using it as I do.

Please take some time to review the concepts expressed in the Critical Thinking link in my sig. to start deconstructing the carefully laid logical fallacies this writer is employing.
