Now then. What have we got? A hodgepodge of smilies from different sets, resulting in different sizes, an incoherent colour scheme, and - that's my major gripe - a box that is so tall that it takes weeks to scroll to the submit button. That is not mentioning the RSI I get from scrolling down to the original post.

My honest opinion: Kill the smiley box. There is a nice pulldown menu in the toolbar. For those who need smilies. Personally, I hate them, but that is, of course, a personal preference. Your mileage may vary, as long as someone kills that bloody box. Please?

I think I'll take BeBerlin's side here- he's got some damn good points! The drop down at the top has all the same smilies and uses 1/39th of the space.

I didnt know about drop down menu until you told me about that my friend. How is the average newbie gonna know? Are you gonna tell everyone? No, the simplest solution to your gripe is a 'Submit' button at the top of the page, above the smilies. Now turn that frown upside down.

I use like the use of smileys, and I often use them to make sure a reader catches the irony or tone of my written mumblings. But I'd rathar have no smileys at all than this cacophony.
is a valid addition to the arsenal. already existed and the others are generally too large, too pubertal or too meaningless.

Now. Where's that "grumpy old man"-smiley?

Most certainly not. The less smileys the better.

Actually, I use a keyboard shortcut to submit posts. And that smiley box is now history, courtesy of Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4364 For those interested, here is the adblock code:

    Code:
