Getting ready for Christmas, and got our tree. We are going to decorate it tomorrow, probably all day tomorrow, after church. I just had to post a picture of this tree, and for reference, I am 5'10".

I had one like that when I lived in Littleton...a townhouse with v-e-e-e-ry high ceilings. I had a 14' tree!

Did you go and cut it in the forest? Looks great! I like those types of trees - lots of room for decorations and everything hangs nicely...versus some of the pine trees where they are so bushy, the ornaments look like lint stuck to the tree.

Are you a tinsel or no tinsel guy?

If I am home for Christmas and I do a tree, it is an old fashioned type with lots of figural ornaments:

German and Polish glass ornaments (fruit, bears, birds, fish, interesting geometric shapes, houses, Santas, angels, decorated balls, spirals, etc.)
porcelain Santas from various countries
a decorative bird's nest in the top branches
Stars
beads
an icon of the Madonna and Child at the top under the tree topper
white lights
long electrified "candles" that plug in to the light string and clip on the branches
candy canes
paper cones filled with chocolate coins
gingerbread cookies
clusters of gilt walnuts on red ribbons
plain glass balls of red, green, gold, silver, purple, clear glass, blue, orange
crosses
small stuffed birds (cardinals, robins)
carved wood ornaments (toys, nutcrackers, etc.)
"spikes" (these are thin sticks with wires at the end covered in glitter and on the end of the wires are foil stars...they look like fireworks when the tree lights reflect off of them)
lots of tinsel
no garland

I can take me 3 hours to finish the tree...so I only do it if I am hosting.

we already have a few candy canes in there, and we are going to pop a bunch of popcorn and string it. Some years we will do tinsel and some years not. All of our ornaments are special to us, from our honeymoon, from vacations, relatives past, and we also have classical glass ornaments.

We went and cut it up in the Arapaho National Forest. We had a family gathering with my mom and dad; sister, brother in law, and their four kids; and my brother, sister in law, and their three kids. after the thanksgiving gathering, we got our permit, and cut our tree. My girls had fun looking for the tree, but only for a few minutes.

We have all of the other traditional decorations, and I want to get some of those "bubble" lights, along with some nice colorful LED lights.

Coooooooool...popcorn with cranberries, very traditional. Bubble lights are addictive to watch...my grandmother had some left over from the 50's and 60's when I was a kid.

putting the topper on, and we are going to string the popcorn and cranberries tonight. I also have to get some more tinsel tomorrow since we only had one string of it for some reason.

But seriously: that's one nice big tree. Do you always put the top on before the rest? OVer here, the tradition is that the peak / star / whatever is put on as the very last thing, as an official 'it is done' gesture.

Matt, that's one awesome looking tree! I remember my uncle use to get a tree like that for his catheral ceiling hallway. Do you have to do like he did and secure guide wires for around the top to stabalize it?

Great look though - that's something the whole family can gather around. Did you cut it down yourself?

Yeah, we cut it down in the national forest (with a permit). I looked really hard for a very straight tree, and no, so far I have not had to secure it, but it has only been up for about a day and a half. When I get home tonight, I will see if it has shifted at all, and if so, I will have to use stabilize it somehow. Last night we sat around watching movies and stringing popcorn and cranberries. I will post a photo once we have it complete.

As far as putting the topper on last, we usually do that too, but this year, I put it on when I had access to the top. I was not going to break out the extension ladder for just one ornament.

My wife just decorated the house for Christmas yesterday. Our tree won't go up for a bit yet. Its a fake but with all the dogs I have a real one is just too tempting for them.


Our Nativity isn't out yet either. its with the Tree decorations so it will come out when the tree does. I grew up with a mother who collected Nativity sets, she has over fifty of them her smallest is displayed inside a barn made from half a walnut shell and her largest has Shepherds over a foot tall. She has them in every material and style there is.
