    Default Eggnog!

The third in our continuing series of foodstuffs that folks either like or hate. I love Eggnog!

Home made is great when done correctly but store bought is fantastic too! I like it neat, with bourbon, with dark rum, or with brandy.

What say you alcoholic? Non- alcoholic? Do you have a favorite brand? I have tried:

    The Fresh Market's brand **
    MAyfield ***
    Trader Joe's premium ***
    kroger's brand *
Castle Creamery's **** (the only four star eggnog in my sample group!)

I think we could get along quite well, as long as you dont hang around the punch bowl more than I do!

eh, eggnog is just a cheap, crappy imitation of boiled custard. now THAT is a real holiday drink!

only homemade, of course, all the store bought stuff is vile.

Decent eggnog is hard to find... in eastern upstate ny and western New england... Stewart's ( they control their dairy products from the farms to their shelves) eggnog is about the best, even their "light" version is rather tasty... rich thick and delicious... but homemade is better! if you get some of the Stewart's stuff add dark rum and it is great... bourbon or cognac does not mix well with it.

4 cups of bourbon i like george dickel)
4 cups of VS cognac (no point using the good stuff here)
    4 cups dark rum (myers)
    6 cups heavy cream
    1 cup sugar
nod to the eggs in the refrigerator
grated nutmeg and cinnamon to taste
(serves 12 Christians or 3 heathens)

i think that will serve anybody well!

The math makes me about 1 heathen (slightly over) - when can I come to be served the red part?

Here is a recipe I picked up over at Straightbourbon.com. I have made this and it is very good.

    Harry Renner's Egg Nog

    6 eggs, separated
3/4 cup sugar (set aside 1/4 cup)
1 qt. Half and Half or one pint each milk and whipping cream
    1 cup straight bourbon
    2 oz. Jamaican dark rum

Beat egg whites until stiff, fold or beat in 1/4 cup sugar. Set aside. Beat egg yolks with 1/2 cup sugar, fold into egg white mix. Add Half and Half, bourbon and rum. Serve topped with grated nutmeg.

I love Egg Nog. Store bought stuff, eh, some of it is drinkable. I tried the Trader Joe's recently and it was decent. Didn't expect it to be as thick as it was and was happily surprised. The best Egg Nog is of course my mom's recipe. It's kind of a family secret though and very involved. Checking out the recipes in this thread I was thinking "where are the rest of the ingredients??" lol. Only problem is that now that I don't drink, how can I make the recipe and have it turn out the same? I've been trying to figure that one out for the past couple years lol.
