Potential life is much different than conceived life.

As for the rest of that argument, I think it needs some refinement.

I'm talking here about human life, not necessarily a particular religious view of human life.

Scientists claim that the embryoes are mere collections of cells. Well, so then are you and I. At what point does that collection of cells pass the test to become a human being?

Actually it is a conundrum. The fatal flaw with the religious argument.

As someone with family members that could be assisted by stem cell research i take it a little more personally and serioously than an amusing argument.

They are so worried about saving the "unborn" that they don't give a damn about those that already are.

I have just received my first negative rep point for this thread!the person who left this negative rep said that my threads like this always reek of bias but try to remain neutral and that he doesnt like that! well first since he has not given me means to respond to him or her directly because they hadn't the courage to leave their name, I will respond here!

Of course I have my biases as does everyone, and I state them, but my intent has always been to allow for other people to also state how they see things in a manner that allows for conversation, in a manner that is friendly but honest, but I do not appreciate responses that do not allow for another point of view to come to the table, or posts that are purposefully demeaning so as to shut down an argument!

If the member who gave me negative rep wants to discuss this further, he can PM me!

Back to your regularly scheduled topic!
And thanks for the thoughtful replies so far!

Guys, please keep the discussion civil!

And try to keep it a bit on topic. This was not a discussion on abortion in general, but stem cell research.

It's really impossible to separate the two as the ban on fetal stem cell research is directly connected to the pro-life movement and anti-abortion.

What's with all the civility comments I personally have not seen anything uncivil from either side. As it comes after my post please let me know what is uncivil in anything that I have written so I can avoid offending anyone.

I think he was referring to my post and the negative rep I received for this thread!

The discussion was on stem cell research, not abortion. As utopian explained, they are not linked necessarily, as the majority of the stem cells comes from embryos (instead of developed fetuses).

The last n posts are all about abortion, religion and right to live / choose and people are working themselves up to a heated argument. That is uncivil because Mark already asked to keep the discussion on topic. Instead, people take the opportunity to jump on their high horse or soap box.

I've split off a number of abortion posts to this new thread:
    http://straightrazorpalace.com/conve...-research.html
Where you can continue the abortion tangent.
But let's keep this thread on the topic of stem cell research.

JMS it was not I, I take no offense from anything that you have said. I disagree with you, but that is the nature of the world. As I'm pro-choice I defend your right to choose different from me. I think you know that if I had an issue I'd be more than willing to take it up with you.

The political factions in the U.S. who opposed stem cell research do not differentiate between the two. As soon as an egg is fertilized, it is considered to be a human being. In other words, a day-old embryo is considered to be the same thing as a fetus.

    Hmmmm...
Stem cell research: huge technology leap that has the potential to save lives.

Abortion: none of my business. I'm not a woman so it's not my place whether or not a woman should have one. If a woman is raped and wants to abort the baby, that's fine. If a woman hears that the baby is going to have some type of deformity and chooses to not have that child, her choice. but let me say this, i don't feel that abortion should be a form of birth control (like the pill). if a woman is in the clinic so much they know her name, she's irresponsible and needs to have her uterus removed. now i know someone is going to say, "but why doesn't she just give the child up for adoption?" Sure that's a great idea, just as soon as we get all those kids that are already in the system into homes and make space for them, not to mention the cost, we'll just re-backlog that system, great idea. here's a thought for all of the pro-life people out there: if i force my will on a woman's "sacred area", that's rape. Telling a woman that she can't do with her "sacred area" as she pleases is forcing YOUR will on HER body. Keep your will to yourself.
