Default Turns out I'm allergic to penicillen (sp?)

So yeah I had a throat infection and my doctor like any normal guy prescribes me antibiotics.

So I go get them take my pill like a good boy, take another one some hours later and then it starts.

My neck and chest start to itch and turn red. The itch spreads and covers my body. I can't sleep I can't do anything the itch drives me up the WALL. So around 02:00 am I decide that I need help. I phone the on duty doctor.

They say: Yeah you're probably having an allergic reaction. They write me a new prescription and I get in my car at 02:45 in the morning to pick the stuff up. I am finally able to get a few hours of sleep after a while not much more than 3 or so). I wake up and have a look at how I look. I'm COVERED in a red rash....EVERYWHERE with something that looks like pimples covering my chest.

I'm now finally recovering. Saw a dermotologist today and he gave me some steroids that should calm down my immune system. Won't be able to go to work yet because the drugs are supposed to have the effect comparable to 0.5-0.8 promille alcohol in the blood. But at least the itch is bearable now and my skin doesn't feel like it's on fire anymore.

So no more fungus pills for me EVER again...from what I understand if I use it again the reaction should be WORSE including breathing problems etc. Turns out these things build up instead of getting immune from it.

So sorry to bore you guys...I'm just feeling a little sorry for myself at the moment.

    Have a nice day

At least you know what it is. I have similar reactions to something in foods, but I haven't a clue what it is. There is only one food locally that I know does it to me, but otherwise it's a crap shoot. I had a steak a month ago that is always fine, but not that time. I had a similar reaction as you described. Grr...

I have had a similar reaction to yours, once. Only I don't know what caused it. It was pretty scary, with me fainting (dropped to the bedroom floor like a plank) retching, looking like something from a cheap horror movie. I looked like that for 4 days.

This happend at 2 AM. They gave me some cortisone shots in the ER, and everything disappeared a couple of hours later. But 24 hours later, everything was back. Back to the ER, and the doctor told me that my previous recovery was nothing short of miraculous, but that she already thought it wouldn't last.

I have several food allergies, but most are known and I can avoid them. This is also why I am not adventurous when ordering in a restaurant. I stick to simple things, and things I know should be safe.

But I did see a specialist to do some tests. I am basically allergic to everything (excepts molds and fungus, for some weird reason). But he also did a lot of lung tests, and luckily my throat does not constrict when it is stimulated with allergens.

calloidal silver (or de-ionized silver in reverse osmosis water) would have taken care of that infection. i haven't come across an infection that it won't cure yet, from my ingrown toe nail which was infected under the nail, to sinus infections, to throat infections to even a prostate infection. it worked on all of them. they actually have to have it in all hospitals as there are certain things that nothing else will kill. and you could take 2500 times what is in most of them (10ppm) and it has no ill effect, though it doesn't work better if yyou take more. just a suggestions but i swear by the stuff and though i do sell it in my health food store i am in no way associated with any of the companies that make it.

Sovereign Silver is a good one as it is in a glass bottle (much better then plastic) and has the smallest average particle size of any of the ones on the market.

Check it out! it works great on nicks and cuts too, but who gets those right!

many people have serious allergies. In the realm of reactions your's was not that bad. I know people who have died after eating shellfish and peanuts. my wife is highly allergic to tree nuts and carries an epi-pen with her. if you have serious allergies you should carry one with you. It could save your life some day.

    True.

The one good thing about food allergies is that you can take steps to avoid them.
Whereas being allergic to animals, pollen, bee stings etc is a bigger problem.
And I am lucky enough that for me, it is mostly certain herbs and spices, and not nuts or things like that.

    Sorry to hear it Alex.

I received a shot of Y-cillin (a form of penicillin) in the arm (it is supposed to be given in the hip or butt) and it swelled up locally and turned red. I have had to tell the story every time I am asked if I am allergic to anything (" well, not really but....) as my med history says I am allergic to penicillin. I can only half commiserate with you.

I have the same deal. I'm allergic to amoxicillin and my kid sister is allergic to ampicillin (both penecillin derivatives) so it runs in families.

It's not a big deal, but I put a sticker on the back of my driver's license so that if I ever get taken to the hospital unconscious, they won't accidentally give me any. I'm also more severely allergic, the time I found up I was allergic I had an asthma attack as a result and stopped breathing :-P

Yeah I didn't expect to be the only one. The effects are still not gone. It's been over a week. Monday I'll have another appointement with the dermotologist.

You're not the only one. Me too.
The only part of my body not covered in hives was the soles of my feet. I don't know what was more frustrating, the itching, the swelling, the lack of sleep, or all the home remedies people suggested.
