This song doesn't really come to mind when you think of the "power ballad" genre... the production is quite different. But I'm tossing it in because it's from 1989 and it's a sentimental track "about a girl."

I think you are stretching on the Nirvana thing. If it did come out in the 80's it was 88 or 89.

It's off their first album, Bleach - released in 1989 on Sub Pop records. I was hesitant to post it only because those guys were the ones to destroy hair metal's reign over the airwaves. Also, the song doesn't have supressed power chords that hang for 20 seconds as a guy in lipstick sings incredibly high notes... but it's still a sentimental song about a girl (as the name implies), written and released in the 80s. And it's a great song, so...

Do you want the perfect example? A song that has great chord changes, an awesome solo and was written by a group of guys that were drunk and high nearly 100% of the time during this period in their career, instead of applying eye makeup and hairspray like Poison would've been? (In fact, Slash was heavily dosed on heroin during this shoot, and he doesn't remember any of it. The shots of him on the bed have him legitimately nodding out.) Here we go:

    Default Hmmm

I'd have to say the Judas Priest version of Diamonds and Rust.
