Where to Live?? need your suggestions
Gentlemen, I have a conundrum that you can help me solve.
I moved to America 5 years ago after 40 years in London England.
I landed in Florida, in search of perpetual sunshine
Florida is not working for a host of reasons.
We need to move.
I have a battle on my hands, I would quite happily live in Montana in the middle of nowhere up a mountain someplace, my wife would like to live in Manhatten or San Francisco. I can't stand the big city thing, yet need a city buzz.
We have two small childreen to educate and raise.
Where the can I move to?
I nee 4 distinct seasons, mild winters, a reasonably affordable cost of living . I need to be on the edge of a medium sized city.
I need a liberal arts scene, young people, nightlife, ethnic food, diversity. I also need easy access to the great outdoors, a low crime rate and reasonable public Schools.
This is a big country , I've already discounted Austin Texas and Santa Fe NM after visting both.
I run my own internet business so can live anywhere in the US
Gentlemen, your suggestions please!!

I too am in Florida and I ask myself this question everyday.
If your a liberal go to the west coast. If you want ethnicity go to the northeast. If you want spanish stay south. If religion is your thing stay in the bible belt. If you like cold and wind go to the midwest. Arizona is like Florida so don't go there. Montana, yes, I like that idea a lot. A beautiful peaceful place. Utah is nice. I could go on but I won't. I've traveled this country extensively and been to every state except Hawaii and North Dakota. There aren't too many places left to go, it's getting crowded and our resources have been exploited to death.Last edited by Stephen436; 03-08-2009 at 04:01 AM.

Athens, Ohio is nice but may be a little small
Asheville, NC sound like what you are looking for.

Thanked: 13246As you know my friend I live at the base of a mountain in the middle of nowhere in Nth Idaho 25 miles from Montana
The wife is a Manhattan Gal and loves the big city, but she was so anxious to have me retire from the Nightclub Biz that she agreed to move anywhere just so long as I got out of that business....
Looking back now I should have moved to Couer d Alene ID a city of about 40,000.... Close enough to Spokane and the Airport to make it more convenient, but still fairly wild counrty...
Forget the mild winters anywhere in the Rockies though, you never really know what's coming over those mountains....

Utah, Idaho, and Montana would be places to look into. Salt Lake is conveniently located with access to the country and surrounding major cities as well as the previous states mentioned.

look into the suburbs of dallas. (commonly called DFW)
close to dallas, for all the culture and clubbing stuff, close to the country for a more relaxed pace of life. winters are very, VERY mild. my winter clothing consists of a hoodie. not nearly as humid as austin. i live in such a suburb, mostly a farming community, yet i'm only 30-45 minutes away from the north edge of downtown where i work. excellent public transit will get you anywhere you need. hurricanes are completely unheard of, although we do occasionally get hail. depending on how much money is in the particular suburb, crime can be practically nonexistant. the further west you go (towards ft. worth) the nicer people get, generally speaking. excellent symphony, football, baseball, hockey and soccer to be had at the professional level. downtown has every sort of restaraunt imaginable. commercially, the metroplex is growing at a record rate. current population around 6 million and change, growing fast, in a circle 100 miles wide. population density at the edges is extremely low, bordering on rural. different school districts are of differing quality, again follow the money. richer suburbs have schools that rank within top 100 in the nation.
cost of living is much much lower than other big cities with lots of tech like silicon valley (we are the silicon prarie) or anywhere in new england.

SWMBO and I have seriously considered moving to the Bozeman, Montana area. It doesn't meet all your requirements though. Billings is larger and has a population of around 100k.
