I believe that Wogan stepped down because he was fed up with the way the voting is conducted. The quality of a song really has no effect on the voting, it seems.

I can't remember the last time I watched it. I am far too cynical these days.

If you want to see some true art, watch this clip - the finest of Ein Kessel Buntes, the pinnacle of entertainment behind the iron curtain.

that was 2006. but I feel the same way. most of the entries are awful bubblegum pop, designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

I find it interesting to note that Lordi won with the highest score ever recorded... maybe there is hope for original bands out there that don't succumb to the quick and easy lure of bland pop.

Jockeys, you also have to remember that Lordi were an established band who had a global following, be it a small one. Vote fixing at it's best, as every mobile owning mosher the world over went with Lordi regardless of whether they were watching the show or not.

I figured as much. I had heard of them (via sattelite radio, yay Liquid Metal!) but you definitely could not get any of their cds and such here in Texas. After they won the Eurovision I started seeing their albums at my local best buy, which was pretty cool.

Are you kidding Maarten? I'd put money on Netherlands to win the whole contest!

    Ditto here.

There was an awful lot of complaining form the arrogant 'real' artists here, saying that it was ridiculous etc etc. Somehow they forgot to notice that we had given them very high marks as well, as did most everybody.

Lordi had an original act, their song sounded ok, and you definitely remembered it when the voting started. Other groups were so bland that they had vanished from short term memory completely.

The total act gets rated. Not just the quality of the singer's voice.
